Join us!

The Carberry prides itself on artistic freedom in all areas of production. We do not impose strict formulas on our members’ work, nor do we demand huge time commitments. We welcome Brown and RISD students at any stage in their academic journeys. Applications are not required for most positions, and you can join at any time of the year.

Positions

Staff Writer

We welcome any form of writing (poetry included) that uses satire to critique current events and cultural trends. Style and format are up to you. Generally, we would like to have our staff writers to contribute at least one piece of writing per semester, but this is not a strict requirement.

Artist/Illustrator

Artists and illustrators have the option to make standalone art or supplementary illustrations for written work (or both!) Standalone art is artwork that is not attached to a piece of writing and is satirical in its own right. Significant space in the magazine will be dedicated to each individual piece of standalone art, with certain individual pieces potentially getting an entire page of space to themselves.

Supplementary illustrations are pieces of art that are meant to supplement a piece of written work. The design of these illustrations should be made in collaboration with the author of said written work. These do not have to be satirical, though a sense of whimsy is preferred.

In either case, the style is up to you. Medium must be visual in some capacity (digital, photographs of physical artwork etc.) We would like at least one piece of art (either category) per semester, but this is not strictly required. You are of course welcome to do both categories.

Graphic Designer

Graphic designers manage the layout of the print magazine. They should have a working knowledge of Adobe InDesign (free for both Brown and RISD students), as that is the software we will be using to lay out our print magazines. Tight collaboration with the other graphic designers on the team is a must. Because of the importance of layout, we ask that you notify the Executive Editor in advance if you are unable to contribute to a certain issue of The Carberry.

Webmaster

Webmasters are responsible for maintaining the website and updating it whenever new content releases. Webmasters must have a working knowledge of WordPress. Knowledge of computer science is preferred, but not required.
